Textile allergy is real
Disperse dyes used to colour polyester are a well-known cause of textile contact dermatitis. Synthetic fabric also traps heat and sweat against the skin.

Check the label on most clothes: much of it is plastic. Ours is grown in fields, not made from oil.

Why hemp
Hemp has been woven into rope, sails and canvas for centuries. We blend it with bamboo and organic cotton so it feels like your favourite tee from day one.
Hemp fibres let air move, so you stay cooler through a long, hot day.
Hemp is one of the strongest natural fibres. The tee holds its shape wash after wash.
Starts soft thanks to bamboo and organic cotton and keeps getting softer the more you wear it.
No plastic, no synthetic blends. Every fibre in it started life as a plant.
Our story
For 15 years, our factory in Lahore has made tees, polos and underwear for brands across Europe. We know fabric inside out.
Then the daughter of our director, Fahad Shafique, just two and a half years old, developed a skin allergy. Her doctor’s advice was simple: no more polyester.
That sent him digging. The more he read about synthetic fabric worn against the skin all day, from irritation to the questions researchers are raising about male fertility, the harder it was to keep making it.
So we built Hempcott: clothing made only from plants. Hemp, bamboo, organic cotton. 0% plastic. It costs more to make. It’s for people who put their health before the price tag, and want to be kinder to the planet too.
“My daughter is the reason I looked closer. Every family deserves that choice.” Fahad Shafique, Director, Hempcott
The research
Before a single Hempcott garment was made, we invested time and money into understanding what polyester, microplastics and PFAS “forever chemicals” in clothing mean for the people who wear them every day.
The more we read, the clearer it became. Plastic fibres don’t stay in the closet. They shed in every wash, float in the air we breathe, and sit against our skin all day long. Researchers are now finding microplastics deep inside the human body, in places no one expected.
For a two-and-a-half-year-old with sensitive skin, that was enough. For us, it was enough too.
So we made one rule:
nothing plastic touches your skin. Not even a single thread.
What scientists are finding
Microplastics come from food, water, air and the synthetic fabrics around us. Here is where researchers are now finding them, and why we decided to keep plastic out of what we wear.
Disperse dyes used to colour polyester are a well-known cause of textile contact dermatitis. Synthetic fabric also traps heat and sweat against the skin.
A 2024 University of Birmingham study found that most of the PFAS “forever chemicals” tested could be absorbed through human skin models. PFAS are used in some stain- and water-repellent fabric finishes.
A University of Plymouth study found one 6 kg load of synthetic clothes can release up to 700,000 microplastic fibres into our water.
A 2024 University of New Mexico study found microplastics in all 23 human testicles it tested. Polyethylene was the most common plastic.
Microplastics have been found in human semen. A 2024 multi-site study in China linked higher exposure with poorer sperm quality.
In 2024, University of Miami researchers found microplastics in human penile tissue for the first time, in men treated for erectile dysfunction.
A 2025 Italian study found microplastics in the ovarian follicular fluid of most women tested at a fertility clinic, the fluid around a developing egg.
A 2023 Mount Sinai study linked higher PFAS levels in women with up to 40% lower chances of getting pregnant. Microplastics have also been found in human placentas.
Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have been found to carry higher levels of BPA, a hormone-disrupting chemical used in many plastics.
A study published in JAMA found children with higher PFAS levels had weaker antibody responses to their routine vaccines. PFAS are still used in some stain- and water-repellent kidswear.
A Columbia University study linked higher exposure to phthalates before birth with around 6–7 points lower IQ at age 7. Phthalates soften plastics and have been found in plastic prints on kidswear.
For children with eczema, the American Academy of Dermatology advises loose, soft, breathable clothing such as cotton, to calm itchy, sensitive skin.
Science is still catching up. These studies show where plastic is ending up in the body, not that any one garment causes harm. But if there’s a choice, why wear plastic at all?

The Hempcott tri-blend
Then our fabric experts turned to natural fibres, searching for the strongest, most durable, softest and most comfortable fibres the earth can grow.
We went to work on our own knitting machines in Lahore. Fibre after fibre, blend after blend. One question every time: what is strongest, softest and kindest to the body?
Three plants won: hemp, bamboo and organic cotton.
